York City Knights are pleased to announce that they have added more depth to their 2020 Betfred Championship back line options with the re-signing of Perry Whiteley.

Dewsbury born Perry started his Rugby League career coming through the youth ranks at the Huddersfield Giants, before moving to Australia where he spent two seasons with Young RL in Country Rugby League, prior to returning home to England in the 2015 season and signing with Workington Town.

Whiteley spent two seasons at Derwent Park in which time he made 39 appearances and scored 14 tries before moving to Sheffield for 2017. During his sole year in South Yorkshire, Whiteley appeared in 17 games as the Eagles finished runners-up in the Championship Shield.

The 26 year old outside back initially joined the Knights from Keighley Cougars on transfer deadline day in the 2018 League 1 winning season, and scored three tries in his two appearances.

He went on to make 20 appearances in 2019, scoring 8 tries as the Knights secured a memorable third place finish in the Betfred Championship.

Head Coach James Ford said: “I’m pleased to re-sign Perry. He has made a really positive transition to winger, he’s regularly topped our metres made charts, been strong under kick reception and gave us a target to kick at in goodball.

“He’s great for the group and we all enjoy working with him. I’m confident ‘Den’ can carry on developing into an outstanding winger.”

Whiteley added: “I’m really happy to be a Knight for 2020 and excited about the potential that this club has.

“As a player it’s the best environment I could ask to be in for me to develop and hopefully we can repay the fans with another big year!”
