Knights clinch thrilling Magic Friday win

Friday 19th May - League 1

Published: 22 May, 2017 - 4:00 pm

(By Dan Fowler for the League Express) York City Knights recorded their fourth consecutive League 1 victory after a full blooded encounter with Newcastle Thunder at Kingstone Park on Friday night. The match – which served as a Magic Weekend warm up – featured plenty of entertaining action for an encouraging 2,111 strong crowd, including four yellow cards no less. Newcastle started stronger and scored from the first opportunity of the match six minutes in, after being helped into position off the back of two penalties. Derrell Olpherts crashed over and Benn Hardcastle converted with ease. Thunder kept the pressure... ...Read The Article

Sensational second half performance blows Bears away

Sunday 14th May - League 1

Published: 14 May, 2017 - 9:25 pm

A flawless 40 minutes from York City Knights sealed an emphatic 64-12 victory over Coventry Bears at a sun baked Bootham Crescent today – despite only leading 14-12 at half time. The Knights flew out of the blocks early and were 14-0 up after 20 minutes thanks to tries from Liam Harris, James Haynes and debutant Callum Lancaster. The next 20 minutes saw the Knights’ discipline desert them as they conceded 6 consecutive penalties, allowing Coventry an easy ride up the field. The visitors made the most of their opportunities with Hayden Freeman and Tommy Brierley crossing the whitewash –... ...Read The Article

Golden performance from classy Knights

Sunday 7th May - League 1

Published: 8 May, 2017 - 12:49 pm

(Via Chris Wilson, All Golds Media) If a turning point can come early in a game then it came in the first tackle of this match. Harrison Elliott returned the kick off into the York defence and was promptly driven back from whence he came, ending up in the in-goal area conceding possession to the visitors. As a statement of intent it was unarguable and the Knights proceeded to ram the point home at every opportunity. And they were given plenty as the All Golds turned in a lacklustre first forty minutes conceding half a dozen tries with just a... ...Read The Article

Knights Cup Heartbreak as Barrow finish strong

Sunday 23rd April - Ladbrokes Challenge Cup

Published: 2 May, 2017 - 4:12 pm

(Report courtesy of Peter Martini at YorkPress.com) BARROW boss Paul Crarey had reckoned this Challenge Cup fifth round clash at Bootham Crescent would be his side’s toughest test yet of a hitherto 100 per cent start to the season, even if York City Knights were injury-hit. He was proved right – with only the performance of hapless referee John McMullen seeing the Raiders prevail. The Knights had beaten the odds to forge a 28-26 lead but then James Haynes had a wonderful hat-trick try bizarrely ruled out at a crucial stage of the game, and Barrow were immediately awarded two... ...Read The Article

Knights Good Friday delight over Dons

Friday 14th April - League 1

Published: 15 April, 2017 - 1:47 pm

York City Knights got back to winning ways with a gritty victory over South Yorkshire rivals Doncaster on a chilly Good Friday afternoon at Bootham Crescent. Boosted by the biggest crowd of the season, James Ford’s men produced the perfect response to their disappointing performance last week by controlling a hard fought game and restricting the visitors to just one try all afternoon. After a close opening stint with both teams feeling each other out, a series of penalties gave the Knights the upper hand and Harry Tyson-Wilson slotted a penalty to get the scoreboard ticking in the 14th minute.... ...Read The Article

Oxford RL

Sunday 9th April - League 1

Published: 12 April, 2017 - 4:30 pm

Late scores from Callum Windley and Jordan Siddons consigned York City Knights to a disappointing defeat to Oxford at a sunny Tilsley Park on Sunday. It was almost three years ago that Oxford last beat a heartland team in the League, with that win also coming against York at Huntington Stadium. The Knights got off to the best start possible when on the second tackle Harry Carter scooted through from inside his own half to open the scoring after just 28 seconds. York scored another a few minutes later through Hull FC loanee Nick Rawsthorne after an Oxford knock-on had gifted them possession and... ...Read The Article

Crusaders pip Knights again

Sunday 26th March - League 1

Published: 27 March, 2017 - 6:17 pm

For the second time this season, North Wales Crusaders came from behind to beat York City Knights at Bootham Crescent. Coach James Ford made one change from the side that beat Rochdale last week with Chris Siddons coming in for Joe Porter, and just like the first game between these sides in February, the Knights started brightly – Jonny Presley shifting the ball out to the right where Nev Morrison created just enough room to put Ben Dent over. Harry Tyson-Wilson soon extended the lead with a neat show and go through the visitor’s defence after 15 minutes. Crusaders soon... ...Read The Article

Rochdale Hornets

Sunday 19th March - Ladbrokes Challenge Cup

Published: 20 March, 2017 - 9:41 am

Report Courtesy of Peter Martini and The York Press JAMES FORD has held the hoodoo sign over Rochdale since taking charge of York City Knights but the odds were always stacked against his side in this Ladbrokes Challenge Cup tie. The Hornets, after all, have beaten Bradford and Featherstone in the Championship this year after winning promotion last term while the Knights have been forced to rebuild after their very future was in doubt. However, omens at Bootham Crescent these days are overpowering odds and, just like York City toppled Lincoln in the FA Trophy semi-final, the Knights stung the... ...Read The Article

South Wales Ironmen

Sunday 12th March - League 1

Published: 12 March, 2017 - 8:38 pm

Report Courtesy of Peter Martini and The York Press YORK City Knights are off the mark in Kingstone Press League One – but not without an almighty fright. James Ford’s men led minnows South Wales Ironmen 26-10 just after half-time and the game should have been up. But to say they made heavy work of the second period is an understatement as individual errors and anxiety, particularly in the back line, allowed the visitors to get back to 26-24 before the hooter came as a blessed relief. South Wales, rebranded this year as the Ironmen, are maybe not the easy-beats... ...Read The Article

Barrow Raiders

Saturday 4th March - League 1

Published: 5 March, 2017 - 11:29 am

Report Courtesy of Peter Martini and The York Press YORK City Knights haven’t won at Barrow since 2004 and haven’t beaten the Raiders anywhere for 10 years – and that sorry sequence now stands at 11 games after a 28-0 defeat in the Saturday evening rain and mud. The omens were against James Ford’s troops ahead of this opening game of the League One campaign, and so were the odds, the young, rebuilding team being sizeable underdogs against a big-spending home side who reached the play-off final last term and who will be disappointed if they don’t go one better this... ...Read The Article
