Knights Good Friday delight over Dons: Friday 14th April - League 1

York City Knights got back to winning ways with a gritty victory over South Yorkshire rivals Doncaster on a chilly Good Friday afternoon at Bootham Crescent.

Boosted by the biggest crowd of the season, James Ford’s men produced the perfect response to their disappointing performance last week by controlling a hard fought game and restricting the visitors to just one try all afternoon.

After a close opening stint with both teams feeling each other out, a series of penalties gave the Knights the upper hand and Harry Tyson-Wilson slotted a penalty to get the scoreboard ticking in the 14th minute. Two minutes later, HTW sent up a huge kick that had Doncaster flapping and Ed Smith capitalised to score.

The Dons levelled the score at 6-6 after 22 minutes when Feka Paleaaesina took a tap penalty 10 meters out and skittled the Knights defence to touch down.

Doncaster took the lead on the stroke of half time as former Knight Tom Carr added a penalty goal to his earlier conversion and the score was 6-8 at the break. The Knights were now doing it tough after losing Adam Robinson and Chris Siddons to injury.

York enjoyed possession early in the second half, and after 48 minutes were back in front – Ed Smith teeing up Andy Ellis with a neat offload under the posts to score.

The second half was littered with errors and penalties (26 in the game) from both teams which restricted the flow of the game somewhat. However, where the Knights had fallen away in similar situations so far this season, this time they managed to control the game well, which will surely please Head Coach James Ford.

With four minutes remaining the Knights made sure of victory with a fantastic attacking set. Ash Robson took a quick 20 meter restart and sent Nick Rawsthorne on his way down the left flank, catching the tiring Dons napping. The ball was shipped wide as Doncaster scrambled, before HTW floated a kick across to the leaping Rawsthorne to score and seal two vital league points.
