Knights invite top local talent to pre-season

York City Knights are delighted to announce that five of the city’s brightest young talents have been invited down to the club for a 1 month pre-season trial.

The Rugby League scene in York is currently thriving and under the astute eye of James Ford, Will Leatt and the rest of the Knights coaching staff have identified a number of local lads that show the potential to succeed in the pro arena.

Myles Harrison (16) is a half back or full back from Heworth who impressed during the club’s EXCEL+ program. He consistently demonstrated a mature and professional approach towards his training, and played to a promising level in the games.

AJ Towse (16) is an athletic and tenacious outside back, who also impressed during the Knights’ EXCEL+ program with his attitude and commitment. Both of these young men are an absolute credit to the coaching staff at Heworth.

Josh Parker (18) is a lively outside back with good evasion and a natural ability to react to space. Josh was initially identified by assistant coach Will Leatt during some sessions he was delivering down at Acorn. Parker has also featured for the York College RL team.

Lewis Brown (20) is a half back who has been outstanding for York Acorn this season. Lewis has already been at Castleford Academy and this grounding has been boosted by Josh Mortimer’s excellent coaching.

Stephen Gibbs (20) is a half back and Captain of the currently unbeaten York St John University side coached by Will Leatt. Stephen has had a great grounding delivered by Mark Applegarth at Wakefield College, and Stephen has earned an opportunity by demonstrating a superb attitude, levels of commitment and standards of play.

Knights Head Coach James Ford said: “It’s very important that we give York players a pathway towards our first team.

“I’m looking forward to working with these young men. As with any player attitude, coach-ability and commitment are key.  This is an opportunity where all parties get a closer look – We’re confident this will boost a growing community game, as the worst case scenario is we send back better players to their community clubs.

“We’re proud of the distance our relationship has travelled with the clubs in the area and want to further strengthen this going forwards.”

The five players will join the first team squad for one month and may feature in the Knights pre-season schedule in January, starting at Featherstone on Sunday 5th, before a game at Bootham Crescent against Halifax on Sunday 19th, and finishing with a trip to the Tetley’s Stadium in Dewsbury to take on Bradford Bulls.
