Knights Ladies aim for more Shield glory
York City Knights Ladies are looking to get their hands on more silverware when they take on the Army in the Challenge Shield Final at the Mend-a-Hose Jungle, home of Castleford Tigers this Friday.
In a repeat of the 2017 Challenge Shield Final which saw the Knights defeat the Army 26-24 thanks to a late try by Nat Carr, and York Assistant Coach Kay Rollinson is fully expecting another tough encounter: “We played them a few years ago and it was a really really tough game. We only won on the last play so we know what to expect and we know they’ll be there for the full 80 battling away.”
The Knights may have been struggling in the Women’s Super League this year, but the Challenge Shield has been a welcome distraction and an opportunity to get confidence on board. York earned their opportunity through a hard fought 24-6 victory over Barrow Island Ladies in the Semi Final, but Knights star and England International Ashleigh Hyde isn’t satisfied and knows they need to improve again to get their hands on some silverware: “We’re trying to be smarter and be more clinical in possession because we have some really good ball handlers, and if we can convert what we’re doing in training into a game we should get over the line next week”.
Rollinson, who enjoyed a glittering playing career before hanging up her boots after the Challenge Shield Final two years ago, added: “Getting to the Final of any competition gives a sense of pride and confidence and it’s no different to York.
“The girls are buzzing, it’s a chance for some silverware and the effort these girls put in every week, it’s no more than they deserve. We can’t wait.”
