Knights link up with Coventry Bears
York City Knights are delighted to confirm they have entered into a dual registration partnership with Betfred League 1 club Coventry Bears for the 2019 season.
Under the partnership agreement the Knights will allow first team squad players to feature for Tom Tsang’s side in League 1. The Bears are the division’s early pacesetters after wins over West Wales Raiders and Newcastle so far this term.
The move comes after current Knights stars Jason Bass and Joe Batchelor (on loan from St Helens) moved to the Minster city after starting their professional careers at Coventry.
Knights Head Coach James Ford said: “Its a positive move for all parties, Coventry have access to a slightly bigger player pool and we have potential opportunities for players to develop match sharpness or highlight where they’re improving in specific areas and force their way into our squad.
“We’ve a good relationship with Coventry and we’re looking forward to developing this partnership.”
Knights Chairman Jon Flatman said: “The progress of Coventry Bears over recent times have been down to the exceptional leadership of Chairman, Alan Robinson. They have made great strides on and off the field with sustainable growth at the core of their ethos.
“We have benefitted from their input into the sport and it’s time to support them with all we can offer. Tom Tsang has created an excellent culture and environment from which we have recruited players.
“We look forward to growing with them on and off the field and this step formalises our commitment to their organisation.”
Coventry Bears Head Coach Tom Tsang said: “This agreement should be really good for us. York are an exceptionally well run club and an organisation who we aspire to emulate both on and off the field.
“There are good relationships between the two clubs at all levels and I believe it will benefit all concerned.
“York will provide very high calibre players and in return we offer a great environment for their lads to gain valuable game time.”
Coventry Bears Chairman Alan Robinson said: “The opportunity to be able to partner a club like Knights is extremely beneficial for us, especially when you consider the calibre of player we will get each week.
“They have trust in us that their players will get treated and coached in the right way and they acknowledge that their players have got to earn the right to play for Coventry Bears with their performances in training and matches.
“It’s a great partnership for Coventry and I’m sure will be extremely beneficial also for York City Knights. I’m confident the relationship between the two clubs will continue to flourish.”
Coventry Bears travel to Keighley Cougars this Sunday (3rd March) looking to maintain their unbeaten start to the 2019 season, while the Knights turn their attentions to the visit of Leigh Centurions to Bootham Crescent this Sunday in what is shaping up to be a cracking match in round five of this exciting Championship season.
