Knights start 2020 with Toulouse Trip!
York City Knights will kick off their 2020 Betfred Championship campaign in the south of France with a game against Toulouse Olympique.
The Knights travelled to Toulouse twice in 2019, and will now be the first visitors to Toulouse’s new Stade Ernest Wallon home on Saturday, 1st February.
James Ford’s men launch their home campaign a week later with a huge game against recent rivals, former Super League and World Club Champions Bradford Bulls in round 2 on Sunday, 9th February.
The momentous double header on Sunday, 22nd March will see Featherstone Rovers travel to the Community Stadium in round 6, preceding the Betfred Super League Fixture between Sonny Bill Williams’ Toronto Wolfpack and Wakefield Trinity.
York first take on ex Super League club London Broncos at home in Round 5, with the return trip scheduled to take place on Sunday, 18th July, the day after the Coral Challenge Cup Final at Wembley Stadium – giving Knights fans the chance to enjoy a full weekend of blockbuster rugby league action in the capital!
Should the Knights reach the 1895 Cup Final at Wembley, the trip to London Broncos will take place the following Sunday, 26th July.
Newly promoted League 1 Champions Whitehaven will travel to York in round 10 on Good Friday, with Oldham making the trip in round 14, the week before we head to Blackpool to take on Halifax in the Summer Bash on Saturday, 30th May at 5.15pm (Hawaiian shirts anyone?).
Toulouse will visit the Community Stadium in round 17 for a ‘Super Saturday’ on the 20th June, and the last visitors of the regular season will be Batley Bulldogs in round 27 on Sunday, 6th September.
Golden Point Extra Time will be available in all Betfred Championship and League 1 fixtures next season – but with a different twist.
When a game is level at the sounding of the final hooter, each team will take one point for earning a draw – with a third competition point then made available to the first team to score in two five-minute periods of extra time.
The Golden Point will be available for the first time in the Betfred Championship on the weekend of January 31 – February 2.
Ralph Rimmer, the Chief Executive of the Rugby Football League, said: “2019 has been a year of significant progress for Betfred Championship and League 1, and there’s plenty more to anticipate in 2020.
“While Toronto Wolfpack were clearly big contributors to the substantial increases in attendances and viewing figures in the Championship in 2019, it’s worth noting that 12 of the 14 Championship clubs saw an increase in their average home attendance – as did seven of the 11 clubs in League 1.
“The challenge for all of us is to maintain that positive mood around the competition, and I know a good proportion of the clubs in the Betfred Championship will start the season with high hopes of securing promotion to the Super League in 2021 – just as all 11 League 1 clubs will be keen to mount a challenge for promotion to the Championship.
“London Broncos will enhance the Championship competition after winning so much admiration in the Super League last year, and so will Whitehaven and Oldham who performed so strongly to secure promotion from League 1.
“We’re also excited to announce the introduction of Golden Point in 2020, but with a twist that will be unique to Betfred Championship and League 1.
“The clubs were keen to maintain a one-point reward for teams securing a draw, in addition to providing the possibility of extra excitement in Golden Point extra time – and we hope that supporters will welcome this innovation.”
Knights Head Coach James Ford said: “I’m pleased with how the fixtures have fallen. Toulouse away in round 1 couldn’t get much tougher for us but we will be ready. Toulouse are a fantastic side who pipped us twice in the league last season. We’re fully aware of the challenge they pose and we’re looking forwards to testing ourselves against one of the favourites for promotion.
“The fixtures certainly will provide our supporters lots of excitement. With our move into the new Community Stadium on the horizon it is a great time to support this club, and hopefully the fans can replicate that fantastic Bootham Crescent atmosphere in the new place.”
“We’re excited by the challenge.”
