Match Preview – Knights vs Castleford Tigers

Published: 13 January, 2022 - 2:23 pm

York City Knights will be looking to end their pre-season with a 100% record when they take on Super League giants Castleford Tigers on Sunday at the LNER Community Stadium.

The Knights head into Sunday’s fixture on the back of a 46-6 win over Midlands Hurricanes with Liam Harris, Myles Harrison, Olly Butterworth, Danny Kirmond, Kriss Brining and Masi Matongo all getting on the scoresheet.

A brace of tries from Harris saw James Ford’s side control the game as they continue their preparations for the 2022 Betfred Championship campaign which gets underway in just over two weeks against Featherstone Rovers.

Forwards Jordan Thompson and Masi Matongo both impressed as they made their Knights debuts with Thompson making two line breaks that lead to tries and Matongo finding the try line himself.

Castleford Tigers are this week’s visitors to the LNER Community Stadium with head coach Lee Radford taking charge of his first game as a new era starts at the Super League club.

Sunday will mark the first time that a Super League club has visited the LNER Community Stadium and, with the Knights aiming for a promotion push in 2022, facing top-level opposition will enable James Ford to get the most out of his squad.

Recruitment for Castleford has been key and they have added a total of nine new faces to their squad including Joe Westerman who has returned to the club where he started his career.

Jake Mamo and Alex Sutcliffe make up a new potential partnership in the centre of the field with Mahe Fonua and Bureta Faraimo moving to The Jungle having previously been under the guidance of Radford at Hull FC.

2021 was a mixed season for Castleford as they finished outside of the Super League play-offs after losing to Warrington on the final day of the season. However, they did reach the Betfred Challenge Cup final, losing to St Helens who themselves would go on to reach the Betfred Super League Grand Final.

York will be coming against a side known for having a strong forward pack and under Lee Radford they will be looking at keeping a solid defensive structure throughout the 80 minutes.

The Knights will be in action this Sunday against the Tigers and tickets are available now for just £15 for adults, £10 for concessions and free for under-16s. Head to to get yours!
