York City Knights are thrilled to confirm that half-back Brendan O’Hagan has signed a new two-year deal with the Club, with an option for a further year, thanks to the support of Squad Builder!

O’Hagan joined the Knights ahead of the 2021 campaign and, despite an injury-hit first season with York, he impressed each time he took to the field. After surgery in the off-season, the former Canberra and Wests Tigers junior has gone on to make nineteen appearances so far this season.

Developing the partnerships with the likes of Liam Harris, Jamie Ellis and Matty Marsh, O’Hagan has shown his quality with nine tries in all competitions – as well as playing a part in laying on many more for his teammates.

After a successful campaign with the Knights, O’Hagan is in contention to represent Ireland in this year’s Rugby League World Cup.

On retaining O’Hagan, Head Coach James Ford said: “The retention of Brendan is a significant move for us as a club, especially on a longer term contract where we can plan for the medium and longer term around him.

“In context, I think he has had a really good season and has delivered some outstanding performances at times. He’s played nineteen games on the back of missing pre-season after his quad surgery following an incredibly disrupted 2021 season.

“I do feel that, on the back of a full pre-season, a fit Brendan O’Hagan would be a boost for any team in the Championship and I’m really looking forward to seeing him have his best season for the club next year.

The Australian added: “I’m stoked to be staying. I’ve settled in really well in York and the Club is a great one that is on the up. I’m really excited for the next few years and we’re building something big here.

“It’s massive for the Club and the city, the Knights’ growth. When we’re going well, the city gets behind us and I’m really looking forward to being a part of what we’re building.

“It’s been a bit different this year. Last year wasn’t ideal and I missed pre-season after surgery on that injury. I think after a full pre-season, my body will be firing and that’s when I’ll really hit my straps.

“I’m only young and I’ve missed two pre-seasons now due to injury. I think next year, if I can get a really good pre-season in, will be a really good one. I’m looking forward to getting into the best shape I can.”
