Stadium latest: Contractors appointed
NEW contractors have been appointed to build York’s new community stadium at Monks Cross.
City of York Council today confirmed that Buckingham Group Contracting Ltd will build the 8,000 capacity stadium – which will become the new home to both York City FC and York City Knights.
The company replaces builders ISG, who pulled out of the project in December, and a council spokesman said pre-construction design works have now started ahead of construction work beginning this autumn.
If everything goes according to plan, the Knights will be playing at Monks Cross midway through the 2019 season.
The community stadium project features a cinema complex, including an IMAX screen, five restaurants, and three retail units which will be run by Cineworld. Leisure facilities will incorporate a swimming pool, gym, dance studio, and a sports hall with spectator seating. NHS outpatient services will also be offered on-site from a community hub and there will be a new library.
This news will be confirmed in an update on the project to a meeting of the council executive next week, which also says that all necessary legal agreements are expected to be signed soon.
The council has also revealed that community partner agreements are expected to be signed for the stadium complex this month with York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and York Against Cancer, adding to the existing agreements with York City FC and the Knights.
