Teanby signs new Knights deal!
York City Knights’ 2022 squad continues to take shape with prop Jack Teanby, sponsored by Bootham Tavern Knights Social Club, becoming the latest player to sign for next season in association with Atropa Pharmacy and with the help of Squad Builder.
25-year-old Teanby joined the Knights ahead of our Betfred Championship return in 2019 and has been a regular fixture in the front row for James Ford’s team ever since. The prop, recently called up to Scotland’s international squad ahead of their match against Jamaica, has made fifty-one appearances for the Knights to date, scoring six tries.
On Teanby’s extension, Knights Head Coach James Ford said: “Jack is a key re-signing for us. He makes good metres in possession, he has developed a passing game and he works hard defensively.
“The key characteristic that draws me to Jack, though, is his drive to improve. I’ve really enjoyed coaching Jack and I’m looking forward to working with him again next year.”
Teanby himself added: “It was a no-brainer, really. As soon as an offer came in, it was a guaranteed yes from me. I’ve really enjoyed my time at York so far, the lads and the fans are great and, by having another year under Fordy, hopefully I can progress and learn even more from him to become a better player.
Discussing further his reasons for staying, the prop said: “I feel like I’ve progressed more as a player at York. We’ve got great facilities, that attracts better players who you can then learn off and the fans, as well. They’re always there in numbers cheering you on and that really does help.
“It was strange playing in front of empty stadiums at the start of the year but, when fans came back in, the buzz was back and that helps you play better as well as bringing the best out in you.
Speaking about his recent inclusion in the Scotland training squad ahead of their friendly against Jamaica later this month, Teanby explained: “It should be good. It’s a different experience and I’m looking forward to it.
“I was in the Scotland group but I didn’t know if I was going to get selected for that train-on squad so that was a pleasant surprise. I’ve got two sessions with them before seeing if I’m in the twenty-man squad so I’m not guaranteed but it’s definitely a step in the right direction.
“If I have a good training camp and then play well against Jamaica, you’ve got every right then to put your name forward for the World Cup.
The Knights, next year, will be lining up without Tim Spears in the squad for the first time since 2016 following our former captain’s retirement. Discussing how the Knights are going to replace that leadership, Teanby explained how he was keen and looking forward to seeing other members of the squad step up to the mark.
“With Tim, you always knew he was there. He had a real presence on the field and, when you’re tired, he was always there to push you through it and to get through your stint. We’ve lost that now, so you’ve got to put ownership on other players and yourself to become that new Tim Spears, to help your mate out.
“It’s time for other people in the team to step up, to do that for your teammates. There’s a lot of experience leaving and someone has got to fill those spaces and I think that the lads we’re retaining can step up to the mark, show what we are capable of and deliver some good performances next year.
“It’s another challenge. You always look for a challenge and, hopefully, we can rise to the big occasions and get this club going places again like we were when we first came back into the Championship and to reach the Play-Offs.
