Trialists out to impress for Knights
York City Knights’ pre-season preparations will take a step up in intensity tonight when they take on the city’s best amateurs York & District ARL at Bootham Crescent at 7pm, with head coach James Ford set to give 21 players a run-out.
Amongst the 21 man squad, the Knights will field six close season signings and five trialists all looking to impress.
The trialists are York & District stars Liam Jackson, the Heworth half-back, and York Acorn centre Matt Chilton. Also starting trials are Dan Hawkesworth and Dan Douglas. All now begin one-month trials with the Knights.
Prop Hawkesworth was a stand out performer for Hemel Stags last season, and Douglas is a former Wakefield Under-19s prop. The last trialist is veteran winger Tommy Saxton, who is looking to ‘go around’ once again.
On the new faces, James Ford said: “It will be great for the young players in the area to see people like Matt and Jacko coming through our environment.
“The lads all want to impress. They’ve shown a good attitude in the few training sessions they’ve had with us, so hopefully that will transfer into the game environment.”
“We will see how they go and how they improve and fit in with our ethos and philosophy.
Meanwhile, the six new recruits in the match-day party are former Wakefield winger Judah Mazive, former Dewsbury half-back Brad Delaney, returning back-rower Sam Scott, fellow second-rows Mike Kelly and Jake Normington and former Castleford Academy forward Rory Dixon.
There is no place in this squad for new boys Ben Cockayne, Jake Butler-Fleming and Graeme Horne – who are being saved for the friendlies in the new year.
Tickets for the game will be priced at just £10 for adults and £5 concessions. As ever, kids under 16 can watch the Knights completely free!
