Girls Rugby League

The York City Knights Foundation will be working with the York City Knights Ladies to offer a number of Girls Rugby Development Days to take place over the summer school holidays.

This is a first for the Knights with the series of full day camps being specifically targeted at girls aged 11 to 16.  Participant can choose to attend 1, 2 or all 3-day camps with further events scheduled for later in the year.

The sessions follow our school’s delivery programme with the goal of giving local talent the opportunity to develop and get involved with the sport.

Within the past few years, we have witnessed a growth in schools with participation on the increase. We have delivered various teacher support programmes with the help of the Rugby Football League and Sports Lecturers at York St John Haxby Road in order to this facilitate this growth. We have also seen an increase in playing opportunities for girls within the community game at local side York Acorn.

With the Rugby League World Cup 2021, world class sport is coming to York; this is not only a great opportunity to showcase York to the world, but also inspire future generations of players and maximise the legacy of event. York will host both Women’s World Cup semi-finals and a number of group stage matches.

Former England International and now York City Knights Ladies Director of Rugby Lindsay Anfield will be on hand to launch the programme and pass on her top tips to new recruits.

Anfield said “I am looking forward to working with the next generation of players and making rugby as big as possible here in York. Any girls thinking about coming, I would urge them to come along learn new skills, challenge yourself and have some fun. We are all keen to see the game grow and open the game up to new audiences to enjoy and take part in
