Crusaders pip Knights again: Sunday 26th March - League 1

For the second time this season, North Wales Crusaders came from behind to beat York City Knights at Bootham Crescent.

Coach James Ford made one change from the side that beat Rochdale last week with Chris Siddons coming in for Joe Porter, and just like the first game between these sides in February, the Knights started brightly – Jonny Presley shifting the ball out to the right where Nev Morrison created just enough room to put Ben Dent over. Harry Tyson-Wilson soon extended the lead with a neat show and go through the visitor’s defence after 15 minutes.

Crusaders soon found their way back into the game however, and fast hands out to the right edge saw Callum Mulkeen cross the whitewash. The Knights perhaps should have taken control of the game at this point – a string of penalties and a team warning had Crusaders rocking – but the visitors line held firm and they advanced up the pitch to equalise through the strong running Alex Davidson. A HTW penalty after the half time hooter gave the Knights a slender advantage at the break.

HTW extended the lead further early in the second half off the back of an excellent break from Joe Batchelor, but the Knights just couldn’t shake the resolute Welshmen off – first Earl Hurst finished off an excellent off the cuff move down the left flank, then Crusaders took the lead for the first time 69 minutes into the game through Ryan Smith. Hurst rose highest to score his second try off a cross field kick and land the killer blow five minutes later – and despite Batchelor scoring from a 40 meter break to set up a tense and frantic final few minutes – the Crusaders held on for a smash and grab 22-26 victory.

The Knights now have a week off to regroup before they visit Oxford RL on Sunday 9th April. Supporters travel information with our partners Pullman York will soon be available at
