Knights edge thriller at Oldham to get off the mark in League 1: Sunday 11th March - League 1

York City Knights triumphed 24-22 over promotion rivals Oldham in a thrilling encounter at the Vestacare Stadium yesterday to secure their first league points of the season.

Oldham headed into the showdown having gone 160 minutes of competitive rugby without conceding a single point – However, the Roughyeds found themselves behind with just 11 minutes on the clock as Chris Siddons break forged an opening for Matty Marsh to cross. Connor Robinson converted his first of four goals.

Oldham got on the scoreboard through Matt Reid in the 29th minute, with Paul Crook duly converting.

The visitors restored their lead on the stroke of half time as Ben Cockayne broke through the Oldham defence to set up full-back Kieren Moss to cross. Robinson added the extras for a 6-12 lead at the break.

Oldham responded well after the interval and found themselves level three minutes into the half – after forcing an early drop-out – David Hewitt found Danny Langtree with a sublime pass before the second-rower flew over the line, Crook landed the resulting goal.

The Roughyeds’ resurgence was short lived when James Donaldson crashed over under the posts to restore the Knights lead after some good work from hooker Will Jubb.

Oldham refused to roll over though, and their efforts were rewarded when Hewitt capitalised on a defensive error from Cockayne and found the unchallenged Reid who crossed over to claim his second try of the day.

Crucially, Crook’s effort struck the underside of the posts before landing narrowly wide.

This miss would ultimately prove costly for Oldham, as minutes later the Knights were in again. Joe Batchelor expertly picked up a Connor Robinson grubber kick before touching down for a vital try. Robinson converted and York were now two scores in front at 16-24.

A fine move on the left-hand side resulted in Ben West diving over to give Oldham some hope for the last 15, but an outstanding defensive effort in the closing stages secured a well earned victory for James Ford’s men in what was an excellent advert for the Betfred League 1 division.

The tough games keep on coming for the Knights, who now turn their attentions to the visit of Championship side Swinton Lions in the fourth round of the Ladbrokes Challenge Cup at Bootham Crescent this Sunday in what promises to be another cracking match up…
