York City Knights concluded their pre-season with a narrow 6-4 defeat against the Bradford Bulls at the Tetley’s stadium.

Though the match was perhaps marred by handling errors as well as fisticuffs and a power failure.

Connor Robinson saw red with eight minutes remaining, with fellow half-back Ben Johnston receiving a yellow card at the same time following a big scuffle just before.

The match was then abandoned shortly afterwards due to lack of lighting as 11-man York were forced to enter the new campaign without picking up a win in pre-season.

The club will await on the disciplinary in due course.

The match itself was a huge struggle throughout, with weather conditions playing their part.

After a scoreless 38 minutes, the Knights managed a line break through Danny Washbrook that took the visitors to within 30 metres of Bradford’s try line.

But the hosts soon turned defence into attack as an intercept by Ross Oakes was supported by former Knight Dee Foggin-Johnston who finished off under the black dot.

Jordan Lilley converted to send the Bulls in at half-time leading 6-0.

Second half and normal service resumed as both sides struggled to break down one another.

The Bulls fielded a lot of their academy players who continued to frustrate the Knights following close efforts from Will Sharp and Matty Marsh.

York’s patience soon paid off as on the back of two penalties, a looping pass from Robinson found Elliot Wallis who raced over down the left.

Robinson pulled his conversion attempt wide just before the tempers started to flare.

Following Robinson’s and Johnston’s premature departure from the field, the referee then halted proceedings, with the official reasoning due to lack of lighting as York.

The Knights return to action next Saturday for their first match of the 2020 Betfred Championship season away against Toulouse Olympique – live on the OurLeague app – before a return to Bootham Crescent for a potential ‘grudge’ match against the Bradford Bulls in round 2 on Sunday  9th.
