Knights get back on track with proud Workington win: Sunday 10th June - League 1

James Ford celebrated his 100th game in charge of York City Knights by watching his team produce a strong performance in the Bootham Crescent sun to beat Workington Town 40-8.

With Workington expected to bring a sizeable pack, York’s forwards really stood up in the heat and laid a strong platform for an important win. Ben Cockayne moved back to stand off in place of Graeme Horne and was instrumental throughout, producing a try and a number of assists as the Knights secured their position in second place on the Betfred League 1 ladder.

The opening 15 minutes was a real arm wrestle as both teams tried to assert their dominance, and Workington’s Carl Forber kicked a penalty to give Town an early 0-2 lead.

York responded well and took the lead when strong-running Sam Scott hit an excellent line to crash over, taking three Town defenders with him. Connor Robinson kicked the first of six successful conversions in the game. The Knights extended their lead after 19 minutes as a well worked passing move created space for Will Oakes to stroll over down the left edge.

A well executed Melbourne Storm-style inside ball at the ruck saw Ben Cockyne break through on the half-hour mark, and the supporting Mike Kelly was on hand to score the Knights third try of the afternoon.

Town hit back just before the break, as popular Tongan forward Fuifui Moimoi caused carnage near the Knights line, and his quick play the ball allowed Andrew Dawson to cross on the next play to go into the sheds just 18-8 down at the break.

The game was put out of Town’s reach five minutes into the second half when Joe Batchelor crossed to score, evading a number of Workington defenders on his way to the line.

Cockayne scored a brilliant individual try just past the hour mark as he ghosted through the Town defence virtually untouched, and York rounded off a dominant performance with two tries in as many minutes – Cockayne on hand to send Graeme Horne over, before Batchelor capped another strong performance with his second try of the game.

The Knights travel to North Wales Crusaders next Sunday as we reach the half-way point in this exciting Betfred League 1 season already. The ‘Gulliver’s Travels’ supporters coach will leave Bootham Crescent at 10am, and is just £15 per person. Please email n.Gulliver@yorkcityknights.com for more details and to book your place!
