York City Knights scored four late tries against a spirited York & District ARL team to earn victory in their opening pre-season fixture of the 2018 season at a bitterly cold Bootham Crescent on Wednesday evening.

The Knights fielded six new signings and five trialists in James Ford’s 21 man squad – with Graeme Horne, Ben Cockayne Jake Butler-Fleming, Andy Ellis and Joe Porter not involved. Veteran prop Adam Robinson withdrew before kick off with illness.

Former Wakefield winger Judah Mazive announced his arrival at the Knights with the opening two tries of the night down the left edge within the first 15 minutes. Connor Robinson converted both scores for a 12-0 lead.

The District side struck back against the run of play just five minutes later – as Ash Robson fumbled a probing kick from Man of the Match Anthony Chilton, who took full advantage to score and convert his own try.

The Knights extended their lead in the closing stages of the half when first trialist prop Dan Hawksworth ran a great line to score – leaving defenders in his path – before Harry Carter strolled through some poor defence from dummy-half to make it 24-6 at the break.

James Ford rang the changes in the second half to get a good look at his whole squad, and the District team took advantage of the disruption to work their way back into the game. Anthony Chilton ending a period of sustained pressure with a second try – once again off a fumbled kick – this time from little brother Matt Chilton, who had replaced Ash Robson at full back.

A high tackle by Liam Jackson on District winger George Hunt sparked an a round of handbags involving every player on the pitch. Knights’ Sam Scott and District’s Elliot Bulmer went for a spell in the sin bin.

The Knights responded professionally to the raised tensions in the game and Harry Carter soon settled things with his second try, off the back of a well timed Tim Spears offload. The game was finally put to bed just 60 seconds later as a clever Chris Siddons offload saw Matt Chilton race in from half-way to give the Knights a comfortable 34-12 lead.

Chilton claimed his second try with five minutes remaining off the back of some smart play from the imposing Jake Normington. With Connor Robinson off the field, Brad Delaney added the goal.

As the full time hooter sounded, hooker Will Jubb rounded off the try-scoring with a classic hooker’s try from close range. Delaney again converted for a final score of 46-12.

The Knights will now step up their pre-season preparations with a trip to Super League outfit Hull KR for Ben Cockayne’s testimonial on Sunday, 7th January.
