Knights reach Round Three with Challenge Cup victory!: Sunday 28th February - Betfred Challenge Cup
London Broncos (2) 2-14 (0) York City Knights
A strong defensive showing helped the Knights to a 14-2 over London Broncos at Rosslyn Park this afternoon, sealing our spot in Round Three of the Betfred Challenge Cup and semi-finals of The 1895 Cup.
London took the lead just after the twenty minute mark through an Ed Chamberlain penalty and, shortly after, Jason Bass went close on the left wing. Diving for the corner, the officials judged that he was in touch and, despite periods of pressure in the first half, the Knights trailed 2-0 at the break.
Early in the second half, though, a trademark Adam Cuthbertson offload, on the Australian’s first Knights appearance, saw Joe Porter through a gap. Impressive on the day, the former York Acorn man ran the ball under the sticks to put us in the lead. Kieran Dixon converted and, on the hour mark, extended our advantage further.
At full back in the absence of Ben Jones-Bishop and continued run in the halves for Matty Marsh, Dixon had an impressive afternoon and scored a penalty from straight in front after Will Jubb was hit high.
In between those scores, great work from Brendan O’Hagan almost lead to Matty Marsh crossing for a try. Breaking through the Broncos’ line, the Australian passed to Marsh who was agonizingly stopped just short of the line.
London, aided by a number of set restart calls, had prolonged pressure in our half but it was the Knights who scored next and Liam Salter’s try clinched the game.
Despite having a set in good position for a one pointer following Ed Chamberlain’s drop from a Knights kick, O’Hagan elected to pass wide to the right on the last. Danny Kirmond threw it along one more to give Salter a run to the line. Dixon converted to seal the 14-2 victory which means Knights fans will be eagerly watching the draw for Round Three of the Betfred Challenge Cup – the round when Super League clubs enter the competition.
