Match Report: York City Knights 46 (28) – (0) 6 Midlands Hurricanes

York City Knights got their 2022 Betfred Championship pre-season campaign underway at the LNER Community Stadium with a compelling 46-6 win over the Midlands Hurricanes.

A brace of tries from The Geoff Pryce Man of the Match Liam Harris and winger Olly Buttterworth saw the Knights come away victorious in their first of two pre-season friendlies on a bitterly cold night in York.

Harris gave the hosts first blood after a cagey nine minutes when Will Jubb presented himself from dummy half with a looping pass that fell kindly in to the arms of Harris who’s grubber kick through the Hurricanes defence was deflected into his own path, the halfback managing to create space for himself to touch down.

Just moments later Harris turned from scorer to provider when quicks hands enabled fullback Myles Harrison to close in on the try line and dive underneath the sticks for his first try in Knights colours, giving Jamie Ellis have an easy kick at the two points which he converted to make it 12-0.

Quick play the balls became the visitors undoing as Jordan Thompson made a strong run down the middle which enabled the Knights to build momentum in the next tackle with Olly Butterworth touching down on the near touchline following an outstanding dummy-half pass from Jubb.

Once again, Harris was in the scoring mood and showed his previous top level experience and skill, side-stepping past the Hurricanes’ goal line defence to score his second try of the night.

Runs down the centre continued to do the job for the Knights as captain-for-the-night Danny Kirmond slipped his way past the Hurricanes defence after a pinpoint pass from Ellis.

The Knights defence remained strong throughout the first half keeping the Hurricanes chances limited and their points at zero.

As the January air made the LNER Community Stadium feel like the Arctic Circle, the Knights kept their red hot momentum with themselves as Olly Butterworth collected a well placed pass and having plenty of room to run over the try line to make it 32-0 with Ellis converting.

Midlands Hurricanes’ winger Anthony Boardman got his side on scoresheet with twenty minutes remaining after quick hands as the Knights let their defence lose focus for a split second.

James Ford’s side put the final nail in the coffin with ten minutes of the game remaining when Kriss Brining finished the try of the match. Another Thompson break found Jack Teanby in support. The prop gathered and immediately passed right for Brining to go under the sticks unopposed.

Two minutes remained till full time when prop forward Masi Matongo forced himself over the line after a penalty was won by Jordan Thompson close to the try line. Ellis converted to make it 46-6.
