Resilient Knights earn comeback victory at Dewsbury: Sunday 10th February - Betfred Championship

York City Knights pulled themselves off the canvas in spectacular fashion on Sunday, coming from 16-0 down after 55 minutes to earn a thrilling 22-26 victory at Dewsbury Rams in the Betfred Championship.

Head Coach James Ford made only one change to the side that pushed Toronto Wolfpack close in the opening round, with Marcus Stock replacing Dave Petersen in the 17 – the former Hemel packman making his debut off the bench with Graeme Horne starting in Petersen’s stead at loose-forward.

Dewsbury took full advantage of having a strong wind and low winter sun on their backs in the first half, building up a 14-0 lead at the break thanks to a brace of tries from crafty hooker Sam Say in the opening quarter, and a Paul Sykes penalty.

A further Sykes penalty edged the Rams lead to 16 points early in the second half, before the Knights scored their first competitive points of the season after 135 minutes of rugby – a well timed pass combined with neat footwork close to the line saw Graeme Horne crash over. A rejuvenated York team got a roll on and a second try came just 2 minutes later – a well placed kick across field from Connor Robinson was too much for Rams winger Rob Worrincy to handle, and Ash Robson gleefully crossed for a try that has been nominated for Championship try of the round on the official Our League App.

Rams loose forward Kyle Trout was sin-binned by referee Michael Mannifield shortly after a team warning, and Josh Jordan-Roberts took full advantage by crashing over close to the line to give York the lead for the first time in the game after 65 minutes.

Dewsbury refused to give in though and powerful prop Tom Garratt stretched over to score under the posts in the 72nd minute to take bad the lead, but the Knights are made of strong stuff and clinched a thrilling maiden Championship victory when Matty Marsh grounded a Ben Cockayne grubber just two minutes from time.

A Connor Robinson penalty after the full time hooter was the cherry on top of a memorable performance.

York now turn their attentions to the visit of Barrow Raiders to Bootham Crescent this Sunday (17th February, 3pm) as the Knights look to earn early back to back wins in this already thrilling Betfred Championship season. Tickets are available online HERE.
