Garbutt + Elliott play host to the Knights

Garbutt + Elliott recently played host to the York City Knights and their business partners, for an evening of informal conversation and presentations and the opportunity to network within the group.  Just a stone’s throw from the new stadium, the new Garbutt + Elliott offices were the perfect location to hold the event, which saw over 50 attendees come along to hear news of the team.

Ben Cockayne spoke, as part of his newly created role as Club Growth Manager. Building on his foundations as a player for the club, Ben is working in this new commercial role to create opportunities with future and existing sponsors and partners, bringing them closer to the players than ever before.  He spoke about the wide opportunities for potential sponsors and of course the amazing possibilities that their first game of the season, this weekend, against Toronto could bring, especially given that there is a big chance it will be aired on Sky.

Naturally, there was also talk of the new stadium, set to open in July this year.   The York City Knights have been taking a positive upward journey for quite some time now, with Chairman Jon Flatman, proudly pointing out that the club has worked hard to become the number one sporting team in York. The new stadium has of course been part of the exciting journey but when they finally move in, rather than being a climax to the story, the new move will simply serve to keep the upward momentum going strong. It has just been announced that the new stadium will play host to the women’s semi-finals in the 2012 World Cup and there strong expectations that the first game played at the stadium, against the Bradford Bulls, will be a sell-out occasion. Of course, a home win will be the cherry on what will be a well iced cake, given the positive season predicted for the Knights.

Darren Crake, Commercial director at York City Knights, talked in greater detail about the ladies’ team, who last year defied critics as they stormed to a 20-12 victory against Feastherstone Rangers to claim their first Super League win.  The team continues to go from strength to strength and their growing fan base and tickets sales are testament to the sponsorship opportunities available with them.

Meanwhile, James Ford, Head Coach gave an insight into training tactics and the latest technology the club are using to help get the best out of the players and in the game. But it wasn’t all talk of pro sporting activity, there was also discussion surrounding the players in business roles, as the entire team is made up of part time athletes.

The club takes strong measures to look after its players, to allow for them to be able to play and work on a shared basis. Ford was keen to point out the parallels between the elite sporting world and success in business and in the work place. Commitment, determination, and innate spirit and grit all make for success both in and out of the sporting arena.  Couple that with the ability to work with teammates, to perform at high levels whilst under pressure and the ability to bounce back from hardship and you have the perfect candidate for any role.

Finally, there was discussion surrounding the community work of York City Knights who have a vested interest in Community giving, perfectly aligned to Garbutt + Elliott’s values.  YCK work within the education system giving presentations and assemblies in matters concerning health, sports and areas such as leadership, maths and money management.  They also deliver rugby participation opportunities within primary schools throughout the city, which to date has seen over 2000 children be involved in two years. Furthermore, they accept work placements throughout the year, support community rugby associations and run youth rugby clubs.

Jeremy Oliver Partner at Garbutt + Elliott says of the evening, “It was fantastic to host the event at our new facilities and to meet the fifty plus attendees representing various businesses that are involved with The York City Knights. It’s a great time to be involved and anyone interested in partnering with them can contact us and we would be delighted to talk to them about getting involved”.

The first-class sporting activity, developments in facilities and continued community involvement all lead to the best of sponsorship and partnership opportunities.  And with the start of the season just weeks away it is clear to see that the York City Knights are in the midst of their most exciting time ever.  With such spirit and positivity behind them both the men’s and ladies’ team look set to have the season of their lives.
